On Art Schools + Art Style: A response to EndlingEndling posted this [click here] answer to a questioned by one of his followers on Tumblr. It pertains to how his art school and supporters treated/reacted to his particular art style in an academic and professional setting. Give that a read first then come back here.I posted a response to it that I also wanted to share on my DeviantART. (If you're getting tired of me ranting about my experience at school, sorry, but this stuff means a LOT to me. I want to try to inform other people of what my time was like there so that if YOU go, you're all the wiser.) Response was as follows:This is partially one of my problems with art schools at this point in time. They're ridiculously expensive, and because of the rapid change in art/media industry and culture, fall into generally one of these two categories:1) They typically have instructors who are remnants of doing their bes
Exercise 18: Painterly StyleTHIS WEEK's EXERCISE POST : THE FULL POST AND DETAILSThe “painterly style” has been a highly requested tutorial subject matter due to it’s increasing popularity to digital artists. Not sure what this style is referring to? Check out the Painterly Style Reference Board. The style has become even more popular from games that focus heavily on this art style such as Bastion or to digital artists like Purplekecleon, who we Interviewed last year. It has a bold and fresh look that relies on color and working with balancing the different hues to create value. The style is recognizable by 3 different factors: use of color shifting, visible brushstrokes, and fantastical ligh
American Comics, Manga...AND WAR!This is a major turning point in the history of comics, World War II. This period of time not only changed comics as we knew them, but also other areas in graphics such as propaganda posters. Now mid to late 1930's we've seen the birth of the modern comic book. Due to the war as well we're also now seeing the birth of war comics. An obvious example of this as I'm sure many of you have already guessed is Captain America Comics in 1941 (before American involvement in the war). Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby who worked for Timely Comics, which of course has now become Marvel Comics. He gained amazing popularity and is often fighting the Axis powers in World War II. Around this time in Japan has been rebuilding itself, its political and economic infrastructure was changing. Whilst American occupation disallowed art or published material that glorified war or the Japanese military. This policy though didn't block th

Eye See, Therefore Eye Am:icontechgnotic:"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."—Roy Batty, BLADERUNNEREvery time we open our eyes in the morning as each new day breaks, two worlds flow forth, each penetrating into the other, as the celestial portal gate separating them is once again raised. One’s inner world, of mind and being, pierces the outer world of light and raw data, seeking to hunt and gather mental sustenance. The outer world floods into our minds like a data tsunami, seeking to reconfigure the secret landscape of last night’s perfectly crafted dream state. Both worlds do battle to rearrange and make sense of the other. It is the yin and yang, by which we create and recreate the world – and the world invades and recreates each one of
master of decadence.Although it might not seem so, she had been the killer in the crowd; that night she had come to hunt them all down. No mercy, she did it one by one. Surprised? Allow me to explain, such devil, such wicked heart, black and untamed. Afraid? Listen close now; her show is about to commence. She hisses, she snarls, and she whispers, and she laughs. She's the prettiest of all, with evil mind, sweetly to prowl. Bony fingers of long sharp nails, her lovely hands were made to tear flesh. But fragile she is and one day she might break. Just a beautiful sinner now wasted away. Oh, such enchanting cadaver, dancing and dead. And as she keeps dancing she starts pulling you down. Down into a dark place you alone would never have found. You shout, stupidly unbowed. But sadly at night, only silence is loud. And as her silhouette continues to skulk, twirling around, you finally understand. She's the master, a queen with no crown. And although her heart is cold and her teeth are sharp, she once had be
Culpeo babbles: Childhood OdditiesOdd topics require odd titles. This journal exists because the other one's getting old and i needed something to keep this interesting. Also, the amateurish journal skin i created years ago annoys me and since i'm an absolute N00b when it comes to CSS i thought it would be best to finally remove it.The last nights i was biking through our town to do nightshift (i love doing that. Not a single soul around and you realise how quiet even the civilised parts of the world can get) and while letting my thoughts flow i was grabbed by some intense nostalgia for some reason. I remembered my childhood especially and....how ridiculously naive i used to be back then. The way i saw the world, all the things i had to learn and understand first (the very anatomy of „sarcasm" for example).I remembered some cases that appear especially wondrous to me nowadays when i think about it so i thought it would be funny if i share some of them.Childhood Oddity 1:Black and white television.I grew up
New Mickey Mouse CartoonsHave any of you been watching these? Animator Paul Rudish (famous for Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack) has been hired to do 19 animated shorts featuring Mickey Mouse and company. The cartoons are, naturally, very graphic and reminiscent of the 1930's "rubber limb" style, but with a modern twist. Here's a sample:Sorry fans from other countries, but apparently this is only for American viewership Although I am told that if you install something called ProxMate in your browser you can unblock them for your region...As of this journal there are 4 of the 19 shorts currently available on YouTube under the names New York Weenie, Yodelberg, Croissant de Triomphe, and No Service. You know Disney, I don't get you sometimes. After gutting the 2-D animation department back in April (laying off 9 long-standing top artists), and after continuously turning down 2-D animated feature after feature... you're still capa
I Will Not Sell OutI will not draw pokemon just because I want to milk favorites.I will not upload every fucking thing I do just because I want to milk pageviews.I will not change my DeviantART name just to prove my worth to myself.I will not leave DeviantART just to get watchers on another blog or site, and then come back claiming DA is forgiven. If I ever leave, I will not do it because I'm ashamed of the DeviantART community, not including those who actually love art. I will do it because I want or need to leave.I will not categorize my art into a separate category just to get on the front page.I won't take trades just to make other people happy.I will not open up commissions just so people can pay me way less than what my art is worth.I will draw what I want, upload what I want, comment on what I want, and stay on DeviantART as long as I want. Because it is what I want to do, NOT what the community wants me to do.
The Screenshot This Meme. The Truth Behind The Infinity MemeBefore i start the tall-tale of the screenshot meme, i'd like to thankReaveT93 and Mochine-Chan for getting me interested at 8:30 at night to do this search. and for the links you guys got, you went really far!Now to get down to business. with the links provided from the two above, i just started pushing the images that where similar, but then i hit the first dead-end.At this point, no one is drawing on the meme, it's just a screen shot, which i found strange, since i thought it was a drawing meme. So, to get over the road block of deactivation, i read the user name of the person before the one that deactivated and searched the name in DA.I did this several times until two people deactivated and i couldn't make out the words of the the last last person who did it.In situations like this, Google is your best friend~I started to Google the usernames and, walla! Most of their images are there, and i could make out more names. Then i got t

Apparel Collection: Movie TimeTo wear this shirt is to cast yourself as the main character in the film of your life, with the dynamic and brightly colored images that make our days as beautifully composed as any award-winning movie. Art is a projection of your creative vision, so project it proudly!Art exists across many media, from the very static to the super dynamic. Moving-picture media is a great subject matter, and it is the inspiration for this graphic illustration. This design began on tracing paper with a sharpie marker as fast and furious lines over a pencil drawing. Knowing that this would be a shirt graphic and wanting to mix up the styles on the collection, I was happy with the drawing but wanted to move a different direction. In searching through images of movie-making and projecting systems, old-school projector technology caught my eye as a relic of times past. It’s all about following the inspiration, and the imagery of this machine that existed as a building block for the film technology we
SickHe could hear it, the bloody figure walking behind him over nimble feet. Then his eyes were forced to close as cold, bony fingers covered his sight. Nails like claws buried deep into his cheek as she breathed softly, surely bloody lips drawn into that scornful smile he both loved and detested."You're mine."And then she was gone, back into the sweet torments of his mind. And then, like venom, she left him on the floor, dead and strangely calm. ---I had to get this out of my head.I know, I'm weird.
The devil just sold me his soul. How ironic.·
